Rheology – Theory, Mechanism, Application @ Virtual Meeting
Mar 25 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Abstract:  This presentation on Rheology reviews the basic principles of rheology including its definition and its influencers – chemical structure, morphology, and environmental conditions.  The impact by various deformation forces including compression, tension and shear will be examined to demonstrate flow and viscosity profiles as a function of stress, temperature and time.  An examination of the chemistry of commercial rheological agents will help clarify their efficacy in various formulation types including waterborne and solventborne systems.

A full day course on Rheology is available via the following link . . . Rheology.

PNWSCT Educational Webinar – Si H20-Based Elastomers
Aug 19 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Water-based coating formulations are an industry trend due to stringent environmental regulations.
The majority of silicone coatings are solvent-based or high-solids, which require solvents for cleanup, and increase
overall project VOC emissions.
Silicone Water-Based Elastomers (SWBEs) are silicone elastomers offered as a water-based latex which provides
easy handling and formulation, with the resulting performance of a solvent-based or high-solids silicone coating.
SWBEs are ultra-low in VOCs and do not require solvents for cleanup. They offer good adhesion to variety of
substrates such as masonry, glass, metal, wood, and textiles; and display increased weatherability and water
resistance in ambient-cure or bake coatings for applications such as waterproofing, protective, anti-graffiti,
elastomeric, air and weather barriers, and paints.

The effect of microfibrillated cellulose on rheological and film properties of waterborne coatings with Otto Soidinsalo of Borregaard
Dec 14 all-day

There is a growing interest to move towards waterborne systems in the coatings industry. However, the change is not always straightforward and often new technologies are required to obtain the same performance as with solvent borne systems. Typical challenges related with the waterborne coatings is mud-cracking and open time. Waterborne coatings tend to dry significantly faster than their solvent borne counterparts and suffer from skinning, often leading to mud-cracking.

Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) is a new, a value-added and multifunctional product made of cellulose, consists of fibrils with lateral dimensions in the nanoscale and lengths up to micron scale. Its unique combination of characteristics from water soluble polymers and insoluble fibers gives a versatile and efficient alternative to technologies currently available. MFC secures high viscosity at rest, giving good stability, as well as offering shear thinning behavior and rapid viscosity build-up, which prevents sag during application. The high inertness, compatibility and chemical stability of MFC opens up new possibilities for waterborne paints and coatings, especially for the more demanding formulations.

The will demonstrate how MFC can solve your challenges regarding open time and mud cracking combined with excellent spray properties.

PNWSCT Hockey Night @ Veterans Memorial Coliseum
Feb 19 @ 4:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Howdy All,

Sending out a ‘Save the Date’ & then some for the annual PNWSCT Hockey Nite social event in the PDX aka Portland-area.  We’re happy to bring this event back in 2022 after a COVID-miss last year.   In historic fashion, we’ve chosen to see the Portland Winterhawks take on the Seattle Thunderbirds with a ‘pre-funktion’ before the match nearby.  Bring your colleagues, friends, family, or even a salesperson.

When: Saturday, February 19th, puck drops at 6PM; pre-funk ~4PM

Where: Veterans Memorial Coliseum (next to Moda Center); 300 N Winning Way, Portland, OR 97227

Cost: ~$40/head; please don’t let price be an objection as we have options to sponsor attendees in-need of support

What you Get: 100 level seat close to ice and players box, hot dog, soda, & Winterhawk prizes (hats, mugs, etc.)

More to come…
