February Hockey Nite (PDX Chapter) @ Moda Center
Feb 9 @ 7:00 pm

We’re excited to get the early word out for the annual PDX Chapter’s February Portland Winterhawk Hockey Nite!  Even if you don’t like hockey, how about taking a chemist, owner, buyer, manager, or salesperson out for a hot dog/soda, a hat, prizes and a good time at an ice rink?  The Winterhawks are so excited to have us this year that they’ll be providing the PNWSCT with prizes to ‘raffle off’ amongst ourselves at the game!

Please at the very least, mark your calendars and RSVP to me (Eric Jenkins) if you’d like to attend the Boeing Airplane Toss night where the Portland Winterhawks will be hosting the Tri-City Americans.

WHAT DO YOU GET? 100 level seat, hat, hot dog, and soda with the ability to win prizes
HOW MUCH: ~$30/head
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO: Please RSVP with the requested number of tickets to me via email

As in previous years, you’ll be met outside by either Kevin O’Leary or myself for the exchange!

Title: Evaluations of Wetting and Dispersing Additives for Use in Waterborne Anti-Corrosive Paint

Over the last few years the protective coatings industry has seen an increased demand for high performance waterborne coatings in the field of corrosion protection. Market drivers such as “Sustainability”, “Greenability”, and ongoing regulatory and environmental concerns continue to force coatings producers to look for other viable options to replace conventional solvent borne technologies. By their very nature waterborne systems require elaborate additive packages so that they can achieve acceptable levels of performance when compared to traditional technologies.

On one hand, wetting and dispersing additives are required to achieve proper pigment and filler dispersions, coating processability, and proper hiding and other film properties. On the other hand it can be said that waterborne wetting and dispersing additives potentially bear the risk of increasing hydrophilicity of the paint film which may potentially have negative impact on paint film barrier properties such as, early water and moisture resistance, water uptake, and corrosion resistance.

The topic of this paper is a new wetting & dispersing additive based on novel chemical technologies, which allow for improvements in durability, anti-corrosion, and adhesion properties of the coating along with improved processing characteristics.

FORMULATION AND APPLICATION GUIDELINES FOR THE USE OF NEAR INFRARED MANAGEMENT COLORANTS

Near infrared (NIR) reflective coatings produced with innovative pigment chemistries can minimize the heat build of substrates with aesthetically appealing colors. In order to successfully maximize the performance of NIR management colorants containing these pigments, one needs to be cognizant of that the coating is only one component of the entire thermodynamic system that leads to heat build. This discussion provides some insight into this topic and offers some basic guidelines for formulators and product managers to consider that can help to ensure the maximum performance potential in a given application is attained.
