Who: Omnova’s Latoska N. Price:
Coatings Application Manager at OMNOVA Solutions, has worked in the Coatings Industry for several years in the areas of Automotive, Industrial, Architectural and Color Science. She earned her B.S. Chemistry from University of Detroit –Mercy and an M. S. Polymer Technology from Eastern Michigan University.
What: Multi-surface renovation paints have enjoyed significant development in recent years, especially in Big Box and independent paint stores. There are growing expectations from consumers that paints be applied over a wide variety of substrates and demonstrate good adhesion and ease of use. Beyond adhesion, such renovation paints also must deliver properties such as fast hardness development, abrasion and impact resistance, as well as flexibility to allow for dimensional variations of wood in trim areas. In this presentation, we will discuss latex technology that meets these market needs

Topic/Presentation: Using Recovered Carpet from Cali Landfill to Make Useful CASE/ACES Application Materials
Abstract: The world is moving on and recovering and recycling or use of renewable raw materials is becoming more fashionable especially in California and Europe. A key raw material for Carpet is PET polyester. Virtually all post-consumer/industrial carpet has gone into landfill. The state of California imposes a tax on this. This presentation gives a view of past, present and future technology to recover carpet and turn it into useful CASE application raw materials. Some brief chemistry and manufacturing as well as the recovery process is discussed. Examples of the design of various products made from this material will be presented. Modification of these systems to produce hybrids is also discussed. A brief discussion will also take place on other polyurethane and epoxy chemistry products.
Bio: Graham A. Howarth graduated with Majors in Chemistry and Material Science and Engineering and minors in Technology and mathematics. He also has a Master of Science and Diploma in “The Corrosion of Engineering Materials” from Imperial College London and awarded student of the year prize. His thesis subject was “The design of Waterbased Epoxy and High Solids PU/Oxazolidine Coatings for corrosion protection”. He has been a guest lecturer there on the MS course. He is a Chartered Scientist, Chartered Chemist, Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Technical Editor of JCT+R and a member of the Editorial Management Board. We are pleased to inform you that we will be holding a May technical talk with Ms. Kajal Parekh, Lab Manager of Coatings Application Group at Munzing. Please let me know if you are able to attend so that we have a headcount and know how many people to expect.
We hope that you are all staying safe and healthy during these difficult times.
Presentation Title: EDAPLAN® Polymeric Dispersing Additives for Water Based Coatings
Abstract: MÜNZING offers a wide range of dispersing additives for water-based systems. EDAPLAN® 490 series are high performance polymeric dispersants developed to achieve long term dispersion stability with all kinds of pigments in water-based systems. This is due to the chemical structure of the dispersants which are based on a high molecular weight copolymer with hydrophobic/hydrophilic character, generated by the frequency and type of introduced side chains and functional groups. Different pigment anchoring groups are attached to provide use for organic, inorganic, and carbon black pigments. This chemistry has no negative influence on coatings properties like water resistance and film hardness. Some additional advantages include high color strength development, no foam generation, high pigment concentration with a low dispersant level and broad compatibility with various binder types. The presentation will cover the properties of the dispersants as well as the test results in various applications.
Speaker Biography: Ms. Kajal Parekh is currently the lab manager of the Coatings Application group at MÜNZING. Here the focus is to identify, troubleshoot and develop additives for coatings, inks and adhesive customers. She has been with Munzing for ~12 years. Her academic background is in Material Science and Engineering / Polymer Technology.
